I feel a bit weird making a post like this because I don't consider myself an authority on iconmaking. But I have Opinions and those Opinions wish to be shared. This started out as a post on cropping, but as I was writing it, I realized it needed to go a bit further than that -- in the end, it doesn't go much further, but I hope it will be of some use to anyone who is interested.

Because this post is based on my own iconmaking practice, it mostly concerns the icons that use an image as their dominant element of composition, but much of it does also apply to other sorts of icons -- the more avant-garde (less plain) icons and the text-based icons. All of the examples are my own icons, unless otherwise noted.

ETA: Because I don't really wish to offend or discourage anyone (and seriously, do you care what I think?) -- I'm not one of those people that take iconmaking really seriously, but I am overly obsessed with the way things look and with trying to achieve a good result. And you certainly do have to experiment to learn, but it helps to have the right tools and knowledge. That's basically it.

Um. The Possession icons are from caps from the trailer that are not the quite the level of quality I usually like to work with. Oh well, what you gonna do?

Well, I know it's been a loooong while, but I am still making icons. I have a seasonal_spuffy post coming up on November 1st, and I'll be posting those icons here as well once they've debuted at s_s. I will also be posting some Flight of the Conchords icons and some icons of flowers, etc.

These icons are all from the first three episodes of Pushing Daisies. There's really only one icon here that could be considered spoilery (for episode 3), but I saw it mentioned in interviews and things before I saw the episode, so I wouldn't be too alarmed...

This is the first post of new icons here at earthvexericons! This makes me ridiculously pleased. :D

This past month I was away on vacation for a little while, but since I've been back, I've been busy with the Photoshop. I'm still working my way through my 40-badillion White Stripes photos, so there's lots of WS icons here. What can I say? They're fun to play with. There are some other music-related icons here too.

I also picked up where I left off a while ago with the season 5 Angel episodes. And I played with some of the "Hell's Bells" caps for the current lateseasonlove challenge (go enter! we need more entries! deadline is at the end of August! click here for more details!)

Oh, and some icons of flowers/plants/trees (photos by me).

So please go friend earthvexericons -- you're welcome to keep this journal friended as well, but if you wish to de-friend it, that's quite alright. I'm not closing my earth_vexer LJ, just changing its raison d'être.

The next few new icon posts will be announced over here, but eventually all new icons will be posted over there and only over there.

And I'm not moving my existing icon posts -- it's just too much work, and I'd like to keep the posts' comments all in the same place.

Thanks everyone for your input on my icon community poll post. I'm still mulling it over (so slow to make decisions omg), and if I do do it, there are other things to think about, like a layout (and I'm thinking about doing something really complex), so for now, I'm just going to continue posting icons here.

These are mostly for my own amusement, since I suspect almost nobody watching this LJ is looking for Blur or White Stripes icons, but I figure since everyone but me and about three other people are reading the Harry Potter book this weekend, no one will notice anyway. There are about 20 or so BtVS and Torchwood (JM promo pic) icons buried in here, too, and also some flowers/plants (not stock images, the photographs are mine).
